Dear Baby Sense Mums and Dads

So who is the guru?

I watched Super Nanny the other day, it was my first time – I was away from home and had half an hour to sit and do nothing but watch TV. I can’t remember when last I had the time for TV, with three kids, a business and a household to run, I never seem to get that sought after ‘me’ time. Anyway, I watched as Jo Frost (aka Super Nanny) brought order to a Boston household.

The experience got me wondering about Reality TV parenting shows. I realized as I watched that there was value in Jo’s no-nonsense approach. She brought the sense of boundaries and consistency to a household and restored order. Actually I thought both her message and methods held value and many were strategies I employ with my busy brood. Furthermore, I think TV is a really accessible medium that delivered this sensible message very effectively; to people who may not read parenting books or may not have a great support system to learn from.

As with most good ideas, there are risks however. The first obvious problem is that the genre of reality TV becomes increasingly risky and extreme. Already this year a show called Baby Borrowers was flighted in the USA. This show saw teenagers introduced to the pressures of parenting by ‘borrowing’ a baby who they would learn to care for. The problem was that the young babies were removed from their mothers and the emotional trauma of this separation and experiment will play out in years to come in these babies’ lives.

The second and major problem I have with advice dished out on TV reality shows is that it follows the cookie cutter approach: that is that one solution fits all. What we know about parenting is that it is so individual. Take a mom, a baby, the fit between them and add in the environment and support systems they exist within, and you have a recipe for a different situation every time.

In Baby Sense, Ann and I made a conscious effort never to prescribe only to give the background to why babies do what they do. I believe wholeheartedly that baby gurus are not the authors of books or nanny’s on reality shows. The real guru it YOU. Only you know your baby. Only you know your situation. So use books and TV shows as guide, but parent from your heart.

We wish you all many Happy Days and Peaceful Nights.
