At Baby Sense®, we know a baby develops best when she is calm and rested and calming a baby is not always easy and sleep problems do occur. Parenting is the one vocation in life for which there is no training, feeling isolated or out of depth is a feeling most moms experience at some stage in baby’s first year.

Baby Sense® provides not only sleep, calming and development solutions in the best selling baby care book Baby Sense but calming baby care products and services for parents too.

Welcome to the hub of sensible sensory parenting.

Baby Centric Routines: The Baby Sense Way

How does white noise help my baby to sleep?

Dear Baby Sense Mums and Dads

My baby turns 5

This year, Baby Sense is 5 years old – yip my baby is 5! It feels like yesterday that she was born but the reality is that we have been around for 5 long years. It is amazing how much a business is like a baby:

  • Idealized and expected – I wanted my own business and watched people who worked for themselves and thought – yes, I want to create something and be my own boss. Much like a woman yearning to fall pregnant, I romanticized and expected my business to be rosy and easy and to settle into a routine (and profit) within months!
  • Creates sleepless nights – Much like a baby, my business had other thoughts – no routine, no predictability and lots of sleepless nights have been the order of the day!
  • Looks easier than it is – From the outside every mother appears to have the balls in the air – inside every mother feels adrift and insecure. Being an owner of a new business is no different. Behind closed doors, Baby Sense has been a hard journey with many moments when I have thought – everyone else would do this better than I am doing it!
  • Consumes your time – Like a newborn, Baby Sense steals moments from my day all the time. As I write this at 10pm, I have stolen time from Philip, knowing he is the easiest to steal from – the kids demand, the business demands but my poor darling husband – he gets the short straw. He must feel much like those abandoned husbands in the early months of parenthood who lose their wives to nappies, feeds and stolen sleep.
  • Gives back 100 times over – But like any baby, my business gives back again and again. I love the creativity, I love all my Baby Sense mums and babes because I relate and I care. I love being part of a business that feels good. Imagine selling coffins – no feel good stuff there – but babies – full of delight, full of promise…

There are days when the maternal guilt about ‘stealing’ my kids time gets too much or the pressure of making ends meet and maintaining quality keep me awake and if I am honest there are those days when I would put the clock back and wonder if I should have embarked on this journey. But this month I received a letter that made me realize exactly why I do it:
“I wish you all the success and know how much you have helped mums like me. I am sure this job is time consuming and takes you from your kids at times but I hope you know what an impact you have.”
When I see my products on the shelves and get the feedback from a mum that reads like this, I know that I love my baby business and am eternally proud of her growth and look forward to another 5 years of Baby Sense!

Wishing you happy days and peaceful nights.

THIS MONTH TRY...
Balloon play – Babies love balloons and they are a great way to start developing hand-eye co-ordination and ball skills. They are large and move slowly so they are perfect for your baby and toddler to use. Try grasping, holding, hitting with hand or a small bat, kicking, balancing it on body parts and rolling on it. Supervise at all times. If the balloon pops you must be sure to pick up all of the bits so that your little ones don’t put them in their mouths.

BABY SENSE TIP OF THE MONTH
Giving your baby something non nutritive to suck such as his hands or a dummy is a useful calming strategy.
Look in your copy of Baby sense to find out more.

BABY SENSE GIVES A SHOUT OUT TO
All the groups we have heard about who have organised a “Bring and Buy” in aid of raising money for the Unicef Haiti Children’s appeal.
Why not organise something in your community? A “Bring and Buy” is where you bring something to sell but also commit to buying something. A great way to declutter and to help an important appeal.

BABY SENSE IN THE NEWS
Baby Sense began as a dream five years ago and in December we found out we were the winners of the 2009 FNB Seda Business Launchpad Award. This is South Africa’s biggest entrepreneur competition with more than 6000 entries received. 300 entries were shortlisted across 10 industries. In our category we beat more than 2000 other entries and received recognition for our hard work. Thank you to every Baby Sense mom for your continued support and overwhelming feedback.
